Hilltribe Village

In Thailand the term hill tribes designates ethnic minorities, most of whom live in the remote highland areas of the north. The policy of the Thai Government towards the hill tribes is based on the Cabinet's decision July 6, 1976 which states the government's intention to integrate these people into the Thai state and give them full rights to practice their religions and maintain their cultures.

Akha pattern

There are six major Hilltribes from the region of Northern Thailand, Myanmar, Laos and Vietnam.

They are, in order of population:

Karen, Hmong/Meo, Lahu, Yao, Akha, and Lisu.

The hill tribes speak their own languages, and there are 100 smaller hill tribes.

They live without electricity, the way they have for centuries. On most organized treks, the transportation will be unique.
