The moat and piece of the wall

around Old Chiang Mai

The center of Chiang Mai is the old city, surrounded by parts of the remaining wall and a well-maintained, moated area with fountains.

Chiang Mai's history was from the Lanna Kingdom, a loose alliance of the Thai states (a kingdom of a million rice fields). It became part of the Kingdom of Siam in 1932, but for centuries (from 1556- 1785) it was ruled by Burma. The old city was protected by moats. Originally only four gates were built, and people would enter the city after crossing the moats on bamboo bridges which could be withdrawn at night.
